Big Kingfish today

December 4th, 2017 by Lady Helen Charters

Today’s trip was with Chris Howell and Dave Majoros from Penn. We started out trolling lures down the reef line as we had a great bite there yesterday. Before long we had caught several mutton snappers. Unfortunately  due to the recent size limit change from 16″ to 18″ we had to send them home to grow larger. We then decided to troll offshore searching for mahi – mahi but before getting out to the likely mahi area the seas began to grow larger and the ride became uncomfortable. Back to the reef to troll for kingfish. After a short time we started to get strikes but as luck would have it we were missing them all. Then one of the planner rods tripped and up came a very large yellowtail snapper. This large yellowtail hit a ballyhoo and IIlander lure combination trolled in 100′ feet of water over a wreck. A very rare occurrence!!  As we checked out the yellowtail the other planer rod went off and a big kingfish surfaced after a good fight.
